- 2020 Chevy Silverado Trail Boss LT 6.2L, V8, 10 speed transmission
I have a 2020, TB 6.2, V8, 10sp, with 71k miles on it. Have done regular maintenance on it, when the dealership let me know stuff was needed, mainly its been filters and oil changes.
It started making this pretty loud whining sound, when I asked a friend what he thought, immediately said probably transmissions "something"...so I took it up to the dealership to get the oil changed that was due and let them know about the noise, which wasn't making it when I pulled up. Had to turn it off and back on to get it making it again. They got back to me that they wanted $420 to drop the pan and investigate further. I wanted a second opinion before I did that, so I took it 1/2 mile down the road to AAMCO, who didn't charge me for his investigation, but also didn't drop the pan, just used his ear and said I needed a full rebuild and it would be $7k. Well that didn't settle well with me so I once again took it back to the dealership, gave them permission to drop the pan and they got back to me with their findings...
You can guess I STILL don't want to pay $4k for a transmission that is well known to have major issues on a truck that only has 71k miles, has been well maintained/serviced, never hauled a thing with it and I don't abused it and take it off roading etc, its just been my daily driver, city/highway, taking some kids baseball gear around the city is about all I do. I did reach back out to them, the guy helping me called me to tell me about this update, I was calm and nice to him, we discussed the state of my shock and how this truck is no where near time to get this kind of major work done, unless its well known that GM has issues with the 10L80 transmission and that my loyalty and service there should count for something. He then mentioned to me (not me asking him) the GM "Goodwill Assistance" and that he and the Service manager would talk and see if they could te some help with this situation. Said he's seen them help with 50% or more and that honestly if they covered it, it would help him more than if I had to pay this much out of pocket. (Not sure what that meant) So I said it would be great if he would give that avenue a shot for me. That was this past Saturday.
So today he called me and said that GM said they would pay for approx $500 of the cost or about 15%. In which I just kind of laughed to myself. I asked if he knew why they came up with that amount and he said that basically the main reason was I was about 10k over the warranty period (which I think is not much) and 1 year outside it.
Still not happy with this I asked to get my case and get me in touch with their zone rep and that I wanted to speak to him. I think my main point will be saying something like “I understand I’m outside warranty, but I do not believe a major internal transmission repair at 71,000 miles reflects the expected durability of a Chevrolet truck.” As to me this speaks to the very well documented and well known issues with this transmission. They even have a recall on the diesel version as most of you know, though mine isn't that version.
I'm bringing this to you all here today to get any more advice or information I could use to help build my case.
Thanks for reading my nightmare.
