Is there any sense to doing an early oil change on the 3.0? I was thinking in the first 500-1000 miles after "break in".

Wasn't sure if the 3.0 has a factory oil fill with a break-in oil or if it's just regular Mobil 0w20 synthetic.

I've decided on Mobil 1 ESPx2 DexosD 0w20 when I do the first change. I was deciding between the ACDelco DexosD and the Mobil 1, but decided there's better local availability of the Mobil oil and will stick with that.

There is a popular tribologist on YouTube, his channel is called the Motor Oil Geek. Below is a link on his advice for first oil changes. He recommends sooner than normal! The main key to proper break-in is proper driving habits. It's a myth to need to change your oil later than usual, or use a different oil the first time around. At least in these newer motors.

Correct! On my TB, I sometimes change it after 1000 - 1500 miles depending on the torture that weekend. Transmission too! Nothing wrong with more frequent fluid changes.

The guy started off talking about his daughter's Corolla and my eyes glazed over, but then he got into some compelling data towards the end. I'm glad I stuck it out and listened all the way through, he had some good points.

I think he confirmed the over-arching concern which is new engines do shed more metal early on, so it's not wrong to go with an early change.

I'm new to the 10-speed...do you have any information on how to do a drain/refill? I assume the trans fluid is thermostat controlled and may require a scan-tool to accomplish?

I always take it to have the service done. That way they can tell me if I need to replace anything else.

I usually avoid the dealer as much as possible. Who knows what oil they actually use (0w20, is it really suitable for diesels?) Or do they just put in whatever 0w20 bulk they have that they also use in 5.3's etc. Can we really trust what is listed on the invoice? Are they going to use a breaker bar to tighten the filter? Plus some dude has to move the truck around a few times and put his grubby mitts all over the inside. Yeah, I know, I'm protective of my trucks :)

I'll do the firs one around 3-4K and since it is free, at the dealer. Besides, they will rotate those 20" tires. From then on, I'll normally do every other oil change at approx 4-5K depending on weather and if towing. And since I purchased a new set of tires from Discount tire, they now rotate the tires for free.

Be aware if youre not about the bulletin posted of the oil consumption on the 3L as well. It will eat oil. So if you are pushing it 10k for oil changes just be aware that they say "it burns oil" if you are towing lots to it will eat it more. I experinced this while driving 16 hours out east and it ran low on oil.

Mine was overfilled from the factory, and I read that is common practice because of high oil consumption during the first few thousand miles. I'm used to turbo/diesels burning some oil so I check the level regularly anyway. So far, nothing wild to report in the first few hundred miles. It's still showing almost a quart over-filled and hasn't come down.

LM2 OR LZ0? Been told the first 3.0 did consume excessive oil, never heard about that on the newer LZ0. Mine is sure not showing any signs of using excessive oil and many miles towing in the mountains.

A bulletin issued by GM indicates that an oil consumption rate of up to one quart per 2,000 miles (3200 km) is considered normal for the 3.0L LM2 and LZO Duramax diesel engines, particularly in the first 50,000 miles. However, under more demanding conditions like aggressive driving or heavy towing, the consumption rate can increase to one quart per 1,000 miles (1600 km).

Mine is a 2023 and had it happen to me. Just an FYI.

Do you take yours in for the transmission fluid? I am to the point of wanting to change mine.

I take in for it. It is more than I want to do. I watch them do it.

Revive the thread...
Always
1. 500mile breakin
2. an then every 5k oil changes
3. an then every 10k fuel filter change
4. 50k on trans fluid and filter change....and transfer case and rear diff

Actually, here's some great newer videos on this from Lake Speed Jr aka The Motor Oil Geek on YouTube:
