I just bought a new steering wheel with all the controls on it. Can I install it without upgrading the instrument cluster? I don't have a problem with the basic one, I just wanted the nicer steering wheel and the controls. Every video on YouTube that I can find is someone who is updating both the steering wheel and instrument cluster. Thank you

My TB came with the super basic monochrome version, so I did for sure. I think you have to.

Look on GM-Trucks website. There's a huge thread there about the swap. you can go to the mid level cluster that has the 4.2" color display in the center with the rest of the gauges being analog. This was part of the safety confidence package I ordered on my 21 TB Custom. It was only $390 and I think it was a mid year 21 option addition. It gives you the radio controls on the steering wheel. Sadly, no leather wrap, just the stupid urethane wheel so I swapped mine for a leather version. I'm hoping someone figures out how to hack the heated part as it has that function but isn't plug and play.

Ive been thinking about upgrading the steering wheel as well. can you guys post some pictures and links on where you purchased.

Bringing back this thread..

I just swapped my TB Custom steering wheel out for a nice leather wrapped one with all of the buttons. I plan to change the cluster here shortly but wanted to get the upgraded steering wheel on first. Everything went very smooth except for the bolt that holds the steering wheel onto the column, GM must use very good Loctite as it was very hard getting off and will for sure need an impact rated T50 torx bit.

The steering wheel feels and looks so much better than that cheap stock one! Problem I'm having now is that my cruise control buttons do not function any longer.... I knew the radio controls and heated steering wouldn't work because of the cluster but assumed the cruise control wouldn't have been affected....

did you ever get the cruise control to work ??

Yes I did. I thought any upgraded steering wheel would work but come to find out the new steering wheel has to have the same cruise control features that your original one had. The first steering wheel I bought and had the issue with had the pre collision button on the steering wheel which caused the problem. Once I purchased my 2nd new steering wheel without that feature worked just fine and all cruise control functions came back as they should.
