Update - Day 19

I was able to reach out to a different dealer in my area and explained my situation. They were more than accommodating and said that they would be able to start work on it Monday. Perfect. I should have started at that dealer as the truck originally was purchased there by the previous owner but convenience superseded better judgement.

The plan was put into motion to have my wife pick up my key fob from the service advisor which would allow me to pick up the truck after I get off work and I would drop the truck off at the new dealer on Sunday night. Well, I should have known there was to many parts to this plan. I attempted to contact the service advisor as well as any manager through out the day without success. I was able to finally get a secretary to take a message for the service advisor. She was kind enough to assure me that she would deliver the message. My wife forgot about picking up the key until I asked her if she ran into any trouble around 5 this afternoon. She was able to reach the dealer before close and did try to obtain the key but was unsuccessful. However, she did have the opportunity to meet the service advisor who told her that he was unable to return the key as the truck was in the shop was tore down.

Shortly after she left the dealer, I received a call from the service advisor saying that they began work on my truck to diagnose the issue. He stated that they did not find any faulty lifters but that the sound was from my cam shaft. They apparently found that a lobe was damaged. He did state that they were still working on a parts list and should have a definative answer on Monday. He also assured me that he would be talking with the 'warranty supervisor' and everything should be covered. He also said that they no longer have a loaner fleet as they were all sold during COVID but that he would push for a rental to be covered by the warranty.

So, it appears that I am stuck with the original dealer but I am glad they finally started to diagnose the issue. I will continue to wait for more answers. I haven't read of isolated cam shaft failures. Usually they are accompanied by lifter failure in most cases, which would make sense to me.
Yeah I also haven't heard of cam damage without lifter issues. You would think they would just go ahead and replace those lifters while they have it all torn apart. Best of luck! I am curious how it all turns out.

Update - Day 25

Sorry for the delay in this update. It has been a hectic week at work, as I am sure most of you are experiencing. I received a call from the service advisor on Monday stating they have finalized the parts list for my repair and estimate that they will have all the parts available by Wednesday to begin the repair. He suspects that I could possibly have the truck back by this weekend. I'm not holding my breath.

I would assume I should call myself lucky. They are going to replace the cam shaft and both banks of lifters. Although, they claim they are positive they could find no issue with the lifters. They have even provided me with a rental vehicle until the truck is ready. I'm sure this will provide some pressure to the service department to finish the repair. I just hope not at the cost of quality. The service provider has even reached out, without prompting, to let me know that they have started the repairs. I received the message late last night. I don't know what has happened for them to have an increase in their customer service but it does seem to be improving.

With repairs underway, I can't help but wonder how this will effect the overall life of the motor? It may be my own paranoia, but will the truck ever be the same after such a large repair?

I am glad they are taking care of you finally! The motor should be better in the long run. If anything, slightly newer now lol. I didn't notice anything different with mine when they replaced just the one bank of lifters. Seemed to have the same mileage and power it always had before it started knocking.

Update - Day 25 (Take 2)

Well it appears that I have put the cart in front of the horse. I received a call from the other service provider late this afternoon. It appears that the repairs are nearly complete but they would like me to authorize a replacement of my catalytic converters. They are apparently "disintegrating as we speak" and "should have been replaced, like yesterday." He stated that he could have them available in the morning and they could complete the repair and I could have my vehicle by the weekend. There is a catch though. The warranty supervisor told them that they are only covered by a 8 year/80,000 mile warranty. The price you ask? $2,000. But don't you worry, that is mostly parts. Only $200 for labor.

He then went on to describe that if they are not replaced it will cause "to much back pressure" which would have detrimental effects to the engine. Which includes decreased gas mileage, decreased power, rough engine and I "may not be able to start the engine one day" (my personal favorite). I told him that I would think about it and call my original service advisor back in the morning.

Before I began this process the only issue I was having was an audible ticking noise. I had a random glimpse of a flashing check engine light at highway speeds that has never returned just prior to the ticking as I have previously mentioned. I never experienced a rough idle, loss of gas mileage, loss of power or any other issue. So I have significant hesitation to agree to have them replaced. Is this truly an incidental finding and they need to be replaced? Did the mechanic do something and they are trying to cover their tracks? I've read of a few issues with the catalytic converters after lifter failure, so maybe this is related? The real question is what to do? Replace? Fight to have them covered by the warranty as a secondary failure due to the camshaft and lifters? Have them finish the initial repair with the original converters, get a second opinion and hope for the best?

Did you have a check engine light on? If you have a bad catalytic converter, the downstream oxygen sensor should be throwing a code. I think they are just wanting to make a little more money from your visit. Because if there is no O2 sensor code, then the converters should be fine. Especially if power was fine like you say.

Update - Day 28

A lot has occurred over the past two days. I do apologize for the length of this update.

After that last telephone encounter on Thursday afternoon, I decided that I no longer trust any of the individuals that I have been dealing with at the dealer. I decided that I would reach out to the corporate side of GM to open a case for them to review the actions of the dealer. Before I could call corporate, I received a call from my original service advisor. A long discussion occurred, but I was reassured that he had went to battle on my behalf and was able to secure warranty pricing for the catalytic converters. However, this has not changed my price. I told him I was going to call corporate and asked for the customer support number which he gave. Well, that number was incorrect and led me to some insurance agency. I searched for the right number to call and filed the case. I was told that my case would be escalated and that a regional advisor would reach out to me, but given it was lunch time on Friday at this point more than likely they wouldn't call back until the first of the week. Understandable, I'm sure they have many cases and they need to conduct some research and ask for information from the dealer on my case.

Within 2 hours I received a call from a regional advisor who said that very abruptly said that they could not offer any financial assistance but they could help with "things" after the repair was completed. I asked what the "things" were and she offered Onstar subscription. I began to argue, as one would, and she said that she was going to reach out for additional information from dealer and call me back. She said that she wouldn't be able to call back until Tuesday.

Mind you I'm conducting all these calls while I am working.

Jump to 4pm and I receive a call from a different service advisor from the dealer, whom is apparently the service lane supervisor. He apologized for how abrupt he was during his previous call but he had more bad news for me. He said that since the warranty side of the repair was complete he could no longer justify paying for the rental vehicle. He said they would no longer pay after that day. I expressed my utter disbelief in the customer service of his dealership and informed him that I would be physically unable to return the vehicle that afternoon but would do so the next day. He hesitantly agreed.

I mulled over the situation that night and decided that I would be taking my vehicle to another dealer in my area that has high recommendations. Again, I was told the vehicle was back together and running but not well. My plan was to drop off the rental, go to the dealer and drive my vehicle to the new dealer. Saturday I show up at the service center, which is supposed to be open from 8am to 2 pm. I find a mechanic and a service advisor I've never talked to sitting in an office, I told them who I was and the advisor went on a search for paperwork. Once he found it he asked if I had talked to the original advisor and I said yes, however I want my vehicle and I informed him of the my desire to go to a different dealer. This is when the 'mechanic' chimed in and said you're not driving that vehicle anywhere. The truck is on a lift, torn apart. Conversation ensued that I'm sure you could imagine. The 'mechanic' said that he moved the truck into the shop for the repair and it was "barely running" and that if they placed the original converters on the truck that it would not run. I began to ask how a vehicle that was only having an audible tapping sound, that you tried to return to me saying nothing was wrong, suddenly developed such a catastrophic issue after sitting in their parking lot for a month. Again, I had no other issues including no check engine light other than the audible tapping. He said he wasn't arguing with me. I informed both of them that I would be coming back Monday afternoon to pick up my vehicle and they should make sure the vehicle is back together.

I immediately called corporate customer service again and explained the encounter. She said that they will escalate the case to the supervisor of the regional advisor and that I should be getting a call on Monday. I then reached out to a friend for a recommendation of a tow company and explained the situation to him. He fortunately knew the service director of the dealer and explained that he would reach out on my behalf as he agreed the situation sounded questionable. Ultimately, the service director of the department knew nothing of the situation. Even though I have asked to have them call me multiple times. I was promised a call by him on Monday morning once he gets to work and is able to find out exactly what the situation is.

If a cam lobe is damaged. That means a pushrod is damaged, which is caused from lifter failure.

This was 2 years ago and I don't see an update. Now I want to know the rest of your story.
