AFM/DFM Disbler

While I have yet to install my Range disabler, I did see in the 400 page truck owners manual that there is a specific process for disconnecting the negative cable on the battery. After shutting the engine off, leave the radio on so that you know when the accessory power finally shuts down, which I think is 10 minutes. Then you can disconnect the negative battery cable prior to installing the Range DFM disabler. If you do not do this, the emergency Onstar battery will be discharged, permanently, and need to be replaced. If I was Range I’d make sure and put those instructions in the box with their product. I’m sure most people don’t read all 400 pages of the owners manual.
Well, I bought the Range module yesterday from Summit Racing and installed it. Took all of 5 minutes, but I hadnt seen this till now. I didn't follow that procedure as I didn't know it existed.

Only issue I had was I had gotten a "service liftgate" error message after turning everything back on. The key fob would drop and raise the gate, but the dash switch and the button on the handle itself would not work. 10 minutes later my wife goes out there and its now working. Odd.

I had an issue with mine (about a year after installing it) after a dumbass GM OTA update made my module nonfunctional. I made the mistake with not removing the module before the update (Range Technology specifically recommends on their website to remove the module during these updates). Anyhow, I had the normal manufacturer warranty and the extended warranty on the module (after tuning with HP Tuners, I no longer use the module). They sent a free replacement and I simply sent the nonfunctional one back to them. Lesson learned...do not leave the the module plugged in during a GM OTA update.

Interesting. Any way to know when these things take place?

Yes, on your infotainment screen, it always let's you know an update needs installed. You can click to install or hold off for another time.

Perfect. Thank you.

So much for the Range DFM disabler. The first module I purchased would not completely engage and “lock” onto the trucks “port”. They sent me a new module and a return label for the bad unit.

The new module clicked right into place, with the spring loaded catch positively engaging with the trucks port. OMG! After hooking the battery back up I attempted to start the truck and not only would it not even start, the instrument panel lit up like a Christmas tree. Every error and trouble light that thing is capable of showing was lit up. I tried multiple times to get the truck started. My first thought was, “shit, what have I done to my brand new truck!?”

For what it’s worth, I’ve personally removed multiple engines from vehicles and put them back in, so I’m pretty sure the problem wasn’t my mechanical ability or lack there of. I used the return label that Range sent me and returned both units. Thus far I’ve not received a credit back on my card. I’ll just chalk this one up to lesson learned.

And that lesson is to never buy GM DFM products again. Now I have a ticking time bomb that I’ll have to trade in prior to warranty expiration. And yes, I have been using L mode and paddle shifting to 9th gear (a pain in the ass every single time I use the truck) to supposedly prevent DFM from working, but as you know, the truck does not advise you when it is deactivating cylinders, so I don’t know with certainty that this hack is working.
Curious myself if the L9 hack really works. My Camaro will show how many cylinders are operating on the dash display when selected. Although I use the Range afm/dfm disabler that plugs into my OBD port under the steering wheel. Works great!

It seems like these OTA updates pop up every 3-4 months.. thats a pain to pull out the screws, bend back the cover, disconnect the battery and remove the disabler every time. Think I'll take my chances it has already had an update since my Range disabler has been in and nothing happened, both functions still disabled.

One of the OTA updates messed mine up. Your wheel well must be completely different than mine because it only takes me about 15 seconds to remove mine from the ECM.

There are scan devices that show real world, L9 does disable the AFM functions...

I have to turn the wheel all the way left, remove 7-8 torx screws to bend back that heavy felt type mud guard to access the ECM. I mean its not hard but does take start to finish maybe 45 mins.

Damn! Yeah, I see why you said ya would keep yours installed.

According to Range, their model that plugs into the OBD port won't work on the 2026 Silverado's. They told me that they can't communicate through the OBD port. Having to use the port behind the front driver side tire is tiresome. I wish my truck did tell me when the DFM is on/off but it does not.

The L9 hack works to disable the stop/start. (Without pushing the button). Verified today. However, not sure that the cylinder DFM is disabled. No way to verify. Agree with another poster that mentioned that the DFM lifter system is still installed and prone to failure. No matter what.
