What's new

Another bad valve thread

If I’m reading it correctly, it says dealers will repair new incoming vehicles before selling them?

Just out of extreme curiosity, has anyone tried stiction eliminator by hot shot secret to prevent these issues from occurring? I'm going to be giving it a shot. 1600 miles so far with zero issues to date.

I just bought a 2022 with 6.2L and 10 speed. im scared. lol.. i am going to try this Stiction eliminator as well. i will leave updates if i run into trouble..... Crazy story.... I have 450 miles on this truck. at 50 MILES I took it to the store and came back out, went to start it up and some lights, notifications etc came on. I could not steer the truck. I waited for the tow truck and started the car to turn on the A/C as i waited... it all went away. I drove it in immediately and it was a wiring harness( from a bulletin) that heated up( I smelled burning smell) and shorted. They replaced this within 3 days. no more burning smell and it appears to be ok. I bought this truck to pull my boat to the river... this is gonna suck if I'm stuck , with my family, out of town 300 miles away in 110 degree heat. NOTE- i've been driving in L9 . should I get the pulsar LT? keep driving in L9. i could give a crap about the mileage sufferage if I could trust the car. I'm already in!

There’s a lot of misinformation in this thread. First, all cyl are the same. Not like the old AFM.
Snake oils won’t help. Nothing is “wearing out”. It’s simply lifters that are collapsing.
I suppose some could bend valves if the rocker arm spun or something but that is not the typical issue. It’s collapsed lifters, nothing more.

Yeah that’s weird. Similar happened to my 2020 5.3 10speed. The whole truck went crazy, reduced power, every light on the dash, hard starting etc.
took another car to work and called the rollback. When it got to the dealer it was fine again, no check engine lights. They drove the snot out of it. Chased wire looms etc. Had a pile of stored codes they cleared. Been fine for a couple months now.
Just a random electrical glitch I suppose.

appreciate the insight. thanks!

I have a 2021 LT 6.2 Midnight Trail Boss I bought in Feb built in Jan. I mostly ran in L9 (no DFM) until I installed the Pulsar (perm no DFM) a month or so back. Seeing as I'm now at 9500 miles it seems I'm still very much at risk compared to OPs 14k. So my question is are these trucks safe to drive? The wife and I typically are in the UP without cell signal and possible surrounded by meters of snow. If the spring/lifter problem happens when I'm say around Whitefish Point in January, are we just going to be snowshoeing for miles (read: dead) or will the truck get us somewhere safe?

Hi. My recommendation based on backcountry travel and land navigation is that the vehicle is not a factor in your survival.

If you have to go to a remote area, make certain to have the "ten essentials". This includes shelter, clothing, water (and a means to filter/boil more), fire, and first aid. The other items include a map and compass (and the ability to use them), food, and a good knife. Augment your kit as you see fit.

If the truck determines your survival, consider yourself essentially dead already. A satellite beacon such as SPOT is also a nice item for peace of mind.

Take care.

It's official, I've been added to the list of TB owners with bad valves.

2021 TB purchased in Feb 2021. Build date was Jan 2021. 14,700 miles.
Truck started running rough a few days ago, lots of warning lights flashing, ESC, Parking Brake, ABS etc...etc.
Wasn't able to get it to a dealer until today.
He called this morning and said my valves and lifters need to be replaced.
He verified there is a service bulletin out about defective valves.
Low mileage trucks, GM is now saying to replace all valves and lifters.
Dealer said my truck qualifies as a "low mileage" truck.
Repairs will take until later next week.
Dealer said he has to overnight more parts, there are 3 trucks ahead of mine with the same issue.

Curious if anyone has had issues after their valves/lifters had been replaced?
i have a 2020 trailboss with 19,000...same warning lights.. got word from dealership, need cam an lifters.. ..wtf

I'm a new member of the lifter club, finally gave up this AM as well.....at 20 K..... 2021 6.2 LT build date 11/20

had the truck on a flat bed back to dealer...happy it happened now, going back to the Baja in three weeks... lol lol... considering the parts are available... I'll update as well...
Maybe the Admin might want to make a sticky out of this thread...

So far my last three Chevy's have been disappointing, 2015 Silverado LTZ 5.3 engine replacement at 30 K, 2018 Tahoe Premiere 5.3 Tranny toast at 50 K and now the Trail boss...

I have talked with the Chevy and will continue with as high up the ladder I can go to ask the question ? why should I continue buying GM products... ? I will say this the most recent service contact has been stellar the national service advisor who I spoke with said GM has upped their game and want to above and beyond what they have done in the past... so far 4 phone calls back to me to make sure the truck was picked up and to accept their deepest apologies. I'll have a loaner car tomorrow.... I'm feeling optimistic......
I did mention If they really want to make me super happy drop in a supercharged 6.2 and call it good.... lol lol...

Update, they found a couple bad lifters on the drivers side.... the passenger side had been replaced completely, prior to when I bought the truck... I bought the truck with 3000 miles on it, it was driven by the dealership owner....
They have ordered the parts and truck will be ready middle of this upcoming week.... So all in all I'm happy with the resolve as well the great service.... So when in the middle of the Baja I no longer will sigh every time I start the truck... so it looks like a total of 5 days with the rental...

I added the Pulsar LT to my truck to stop the Dynamic Fuel management. It also stops the auto/start stop feature. I do not have to hit the button. I added an oil catch can as well. Hope to keep the engine running smoothly. Love my truck.

These are the the first two mods I’m doing to my truck as well. Already have the parts at home. Truck supposed to arrive at dealer this weekend. 🙏🏻

“Bad batch” of valve springs. It’s a design flaw affecting all 5.3 and 6.2s with DFM.
Lifters*

They require 45# of pressure from the oil system to proper/fully engage and disengage. The 'failure' happens when a partial engagement occurs and the lifter fails, which causes a hung lifter and bent pushrods. Also usually causes small bits of metal to cycle through the engine, and causes a much larger catastrophic failure.

The 0w20/5w20 oil doesn't help the situation much if the oil starts to thin out too much and oil pressure is lost whilst the engine continues to look for RPM, Speed, Gear, Throttle Position to engage or disengage the AFM/DFM system and cut cylinders.

If 0w30 or 5w30 were used instead this issue might not occur as often, but at the expense of fuel mileage.
