Is 5'8" enough room?

Anyone got a camper shell used for sleeping under with their 5'8" bed? I grew up camping at the river, in a 82 Chevy Silverado with an 8ft bed. We'd throw the shell on and lay 2x4s across the rails, slide a sheet of plywood over and then a full size mattress. Underneath was all storage. Good times. My kid wants to experience the same. I'm 5'11" but I see when a camper shell is on a 5'8" bed the back glass goes all the way over the tailgate. Dont want to waste 3k on a shell if it won't work. Has Anybody tried this that can give feedback?
