ISO Window Tint Advice/Experiences

Hi, All!
I am scheduled to get my two front door windows ceramic tinted next Wednesday, and I am struggling between going 20% and 35%. I know that the back and rear windows are around 20% and I really like the idea of them matching, however, my hang up is kind of two fold. One, here in Illinois, the legal percentage is 35 on the front door windows. Two, my aging eyes aren't great for night driving as it is. Now, I know MANY people tint below legal levels and usually as long as they behave themselves, they don't attract much legal attention. So, my concern is more about nighttime driving visibility. I do drive a fair amount at night. I have watched umpteen videos and the percentages seem to look differently on every video, not to mention all the different advice given.

My reasoning for wanting to get some tint is for heat and UV reduction as well as a little privacy. And, let's face it, a bit of a sleeker look on my exterior. I love the look of 20% from the exterior and I got to see an example of 20% at the tint shop from the interior. It looked great, but the shop was well lit with lots of natural light beaming in, so it really doesn't give me any indication of how it would be at night. I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences with window tint, specifically at 20% and/or 35% and at night. Any pics would be welcomed too! I'd really like to see some 35% on the front door windows with the factory "20%" on the rear door windows as that is what I am leaning slightly toward currently. Thanks for any input guys!
I would let the legal part sway you. I'm in SC and if our tint is off the cop will have us pull it off right there. And there is nothing worse than throwing your money away on the side of the highway. And I'm a retired police officer, but tint wasn't something we ever look at because it wasn't really a thing.
But I do have to agree with the tint at night. If you have any difficulty, you should go with the one that works.

Go with 35%. Since you regularly drive at night and have vision concerns, 35% is the smart choice.

Why 35% is better for you:
  • Much safer for night driving
  • Completely legal in Illinois
  • Still gives you great heat/UV protection and privacy
  • Will match closely enough with your factory rear tints for a good look
The reality: 20% looks cool during the day, but at night it can be dangerously dark - especially with aging eyes, bad weather, or in poorly lit areas.

You'll enjoy the 35% tint much more for everyday driving, especially at night. The safety and peace of mind are worth it.

i will chime in here, if or when doing the 20%...doing the front windshield...even with a clear ceramic, greatly enhances the night vision from inside by blocking the additional light coming in and glaring against the side windows

I went 35% on the two front and I tinted over the rear 2 and the back sliding 3 with 5%

I have done this on all of my last 4 trucks and only once did I get a ticket for it. And honestly he pulled me over for speeding, he was a really nice guy and said he can give me a speeding ticket or a window tint ticket and I could choose. I took the tint. I went on my merry way, paid the fine and have not had another since. (This is in Alberta, Canada) (I am knocking on wood right now, don't want to jinx it LOL)

You can still see through my front side windows, but the rears and back are black and you can only see through them (from the outside in) if you put your face right up to the glass.

Night time driving I have no issues at all, if I need to back up, I can see, but more so I have the camera and that helps.
