Anyone smoke their taillights?

I’ve been looking at these for this mod. Haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Nice because if you don’t like or want to change they are removable. Bad because at 70 down the highway they are also removable

They also have a smoked third brake light cover.

There seems to be a pro and con to every option

Anybody have any idea how to make these more gloss? Put on a few shades of spray then did a few clear coats and this is it. Not impressed

NiteShades is terribly flat. I used it on my 86 S10 years ago. The best way I found to smoke lights is to use automotive clear and add a few drops of black paint and then spray a few coats until you get the desired darkness. You get the shiny gloss of paint and the desired smoke effect. The biggest drawback is having the equipment to do it.

I am looking into smoking my taillights but I do not know what is the best way to go without breaking the bank with Recons. Also, if anyone has smoked the OEM taillights, what is a good percentage to tint so the lights can still be seen...I do not want to create a road hazard.

I just simply purchased smoked out taillight covers. Simple.

Yeah I was looking at these too, but saw some reviews that they can or will come off. Still on the fence about it.

I had no problem with them not being secure but I eventually decided that they were too dark so I removed them.

How about spraying them with VHT nightshades? Used this several times and works great - have a can left over from the Jeep- thought about doing it to mine.

How in the world would you spray the INSIDE of the taillight????

Same as the exterior, heat the light in an oven at lower temps 250ish for about 15 mins...the lenses will come apart

this is how most custom light modifiers go about this...until you get in to manufacturing the lights and have a source for molded parts.

Yup, did the same with the headlights on my old F150 I did a bunch of custom work too. Baked the lights and pulled the lenses, taped off the reflective area and then paint matched the rest of the inside of the light to match the custom body paint. Turned out awesome.

The lenses aren't clear on taillights. They are molded red. Tinting the inside would barely do anything. Automotive clear mixed with some black on the outside is the best solution. Headlights they're usually painting the chrome or black to color match of the housing, not the lense.
