Lug Nut Color

For some reason I was thinking they were 21 and not 22mm. I have 3 different lug sizes I use when I'm putting my winter wheels on, 19mm, 21mm for the spline lock key and 22mm for the oem lugnuts.

Yea, it is somewhat ridiculous I know...until its not. The oem lugs are the (cheaper) capped 2-piece design. This all works fine until winters and impact wrenches take their toll over time. It can become quite the issue and worse if roadside or off-road. I have had just one fail (luckily in my driveway during a rotation) over the years. 6pt socket didn't fit but a cheap 12pt kinda did, so I pounded it into place - The cap then essentially spun/broke off resulting in a few hours with a dremel and chisels.

2 piece lug nuts swell because moisture gets trapped between the steel core and outer cap, causing rust that deforms the nut so a standard wrench won't fit.

...and they're on. It got up to 17F, and with snow coming in, then deep freeze, I went out and swapped lugs and torqued to spec. I like the look. Now those center hubs have my eye....and I have to get rid of those bicycle tires

So i broke down and bought the Rough Country black wheel lugs and the Etsy all black Chevy center caps....the center caps were outa round and plastic clips broke first try...refund on Chinese crap....Rough Country who usually has good stuff....wrong Fucking Chinesium... half the thickness of stock lug nuts ...probably pot metal too...guess ill powder coat the stock lugs black

Well that sucks. I would have thought the RC ones would be decent.

Might not apply, but when I checked with RC on the black lugs they said they wouldn't fit stock wheels and were a different size than the stock ones. IDK what aftermarket wheels they would fit but I have stock ones so I bought a set off Amazon. I can link them if that would help as they've been on for a month or 2 now and are still doing just fine.

Aftermarket wheels generally require a thinner lug nut to fit. The seats are all the same bulge/acorn style, but OEM wheels have a large lug nut pocket and have fatter lugs to fill the space. RAM 1500's have the same 14x1.5 thread lugs as GM and I saw a lot of those in black on ebay.

So, I just rotated my tires for the first time in almost a year (overdue I know, but only 15,000 km/9000 miles) and put my OEM black lugs on this truck for the first time.

Upon inspection of the factory lugs, every single one of these cheap POS factory lugs split down the side.

These are 10 month old lugs from a 2025 Trail Boss. Don't tell me this is because I used a 7/8 impact socket instead of a 22mm?

This is as clean as my truck gets. Dirt road livin'!

I've been using an impact on my 22mm factory lugs since I got the truck in 2021 when I swap the factory wheels back on for winter. ZERO cracks in them. Try using the right tool. It is just a thin stainless cap over a steel lug nut. Same thing GM has been doing for years. My 1985 Camaro IROC has black steel sleeves over the steel lug. They get loose and can come off the lug nut. Mine haven't but several of them have a significant amount of slop.
