2021 Trail Boss Tire Advice

Hello all, i have been trying to read all the posts on tires on here, and have come up with a few types i cant decide on so i wanted to see if anyone can lend me any advice. I mainly use the truck on highway. every now and then around the property to haul stuff, or haul my small trailer with the dirt bike and 4 wheeler. Travel a ton to different states for baseball tournaments, so pack up everything in bed and travel. So road noise is big for us that way we dont have to talk loud or turn raid up to drum out the humming lol. i have the wrangler duratac orginals on the truck with about 28k miles. every 5-6k tires have been rotated with oil change, but wow they are now very loud. here are the ones i found that i have been trying to read on. stock size 275/65/R18

Nitto Ridge Grappler
Nitto Terra Grappler G2
Toyo Open Country A/T
Falken Wildpeak A/T
Cooper Discoverer AT3 LT
Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S

Thx again everyone love this forum so far with advice and directions :)

I have 20/20 trail Boss with the dura tracks. I had to take them off at 30000 because of the noise. I installed Goodrich KO2 and so far they are good. I was going to try the Michelin LTZ but not sure if they would look good on the truck. Good luck but I understand the noise issue and I couldn't take it anymore 🙂

Has anyone tried Firestone Destination X/T or M/T2?

For a highway tire with decent off road traction, the factory Bridgestone Dueler RSW's are really good. I put a lot of highway miles on my truck, almost 100K in 3 years, and the Dueler RSW's are far superior to my old duratracs on the the highway. They will not compete with the Duratracs for sand, mud, etc., but for hard pack, dirt roads, light slop, work in the field, etc. they are fantastic and are super quiet for the ride home on the highway.
Another one of those who couldn't stand the dura track noise after 30,000 mi. I went with the KO2s and so far pretty happy.

Checkout roughcpuntries tires. I run them in 35s. Nice tire. 10k mile half of which is towing so far and 90% tread left.

How many miles do you have on the KO2's? I am looking at those to replace my Duelers, and I am hesitant to go with an aggressive pattern after the noise issues I experienced with the Duratracs. I am battling internally between the KO2's and the Nitto Recons.

I wore out 3 sets of KO2s on my previous Chevy truck. Best tire you can buy. They are off road tough and dont make a sound on the road. They are an all terrain tire, not a mud terrain like the duratrack. Hence the quiet ride. And they are guaranteed for 50,000 miles.

Duratrac's are loud. Like I said before, I like when people here me with loud tires. Yeah, they hear my Harley too. It will be interesting to see how loud the KO's get after they are wore down. Another way to look at is, the Duratrac's aren't loud off road. Wait you guys don't drive off road. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

KO2s get loud too. Though from extensive experience with both tires I can say the KO2s are not as annoying...perhaps it's the tone of the sound or maybe they are just slightly quieter.

Bottom line is this - there aren't any quiet but aggressive-looking off-road tires. You will see lots of guys talking about how much quieter their new tires are vs their old tires...but that's because their old tires were old. Their new tires will be loud when they get old too. Now there are some wild cards, because they're relatively new tires - like the Recon Grappler or the Territory MT. But I wouldn't hold my breath expecting them to be super quiet either. They may be better - I have the Territory MTs and so far i'm optimistic...but I don't expect a world of difference vs the popular options out there now.

You also don't want to lose sight of what's real important in a truck tire in your quest for a quieter tire. I switched from KO2s to Duratracs years ago and would not go back regardless of the noise because the Duratracs are so much better in bad conditions. I also will not be investing in Ridge Grapplers again because while they too are a bit quieter than the Duratracs, they can't come close in poor weather traction and treadwear. The jury is still out on the Territory MTs I put on two months ago but i'm hoping that they inherited their predecessor's bad weather abilities.

Hankook AT2 Extreme
Kumho Road Venture AT52
Nexen Roadian ATX
Nitto Nomad Grappler
Toyo AT3
Mastercraft Courser Trail AT

All are low weight, known for low road noise, all are 3PMS rated, all have a decent aggressive sidewall look, offer a really good road compliant ride and come in an SL rated tire. If your driving a 1500 and not doing serious off roading with lots of really sharp rock, shale, etc areas, no need for a 10 ply tire. 10 ply is going to add weight and sidewall stiffness that you dont really need. There may be more but this is my short list as of today. I'm also in the market for tires soon.

I replaced my stock Duras with 295 x 65 x 18’s Duras they are significantly quieter handle the same etc etc I run 45 PSI in each ….I have 7 k on them now and same level of road noise, yes they get a bit louder with miles … I’m on the Baja with jagged rocks , long rocky high speed roads and a gooey mess’s that you cannot walk through … All my buddy's have trucks… I go last through crappy sections … when I went first a majority couldn’t follow me … Road noise is part of the deal … I love mine they grip everything like shit to a blanket … dunno about snow or ice …KO’s don’t get as loud when worn… All I know is when doin 70 down a dirt road I turn the wheel the tires dig in and turn 👍🏽 got 39 K very hard abusive miles out of my last set … just my 2 c’s

There are differences between the Wrangler Duratracs and Territory MT tires. The stock Territory tires are working great for me, but at 30,000 miles they are getting a bit noisy. I drive mostly on highway, as well. But I can't afford two sets of wheels and tires on this vehicle (that's for the Corvette.)

So I am planning on the BFG KO2's when the time comes. Toyo, Nitto, Yoko, Falken, and now Cooper ... all foreign made. Buy American.

Most of Toyo, Nitto, Yoko, Cooper tires sold into the US are made at factories in the US. They of course also have manufacturing overseas but a lot of the big name tire producers have regional plants for a number of reasons.
