2021 Trail Boss Tire Advice

My stock Territory tires (great tire! Traction! Air down to ~16 PSI) now have more than 30,000 miles ...

I would kinda prefer either Wrangler Territory (OEM) or BFG KO2 tires. And I scanned through all of our posts in this thread, but I didn't see any mention of Milestar Patagonia tires. I would also prefer tires made in the USA, but even some Cooper tires are not made in America.

What is wrong with these Patagonia X/T tires? ... the price seems ridiculous. (They are made in Taiwan, and have a 40,000 mile warranty.)

Talk to the Jeep guys about the Pats. They've become a running joke on the Jeep forums - everyone's had a set cause they're so cheap, but they're garbage...loud, poor wet weather and off-road traction, and they barely last 30k miles. Of course, all these problems don't show up until 10k+ miles...those first few thousand miles are great. But yeah, steer clear.

Actually that's an E-range tire so don't just steer clear, floor it and get away as fast as you can.

Know any Vets that can hook you up with the USAA discount? That's 25% off all Goodyear tires with $99.99 mounting and balancing. They were running a promotion back in the early summer for a $100 rebate so that paid for the mounting and with the discount I ended up getting my Territory MT 35's for $244 each mounted. You can get pretty close to the USAA discount if you buy from an Ebay dealer.

Hey, thanks for the advice. I have never taken advantage of discounts for Veterans. But for tires, I might.

I'm lucky that our son owns a delivery business with a fleet of small box vans and pickups. He not only gets a business volume discount, he's a vet/vet owned business and gets 5% off extra. He buys me tires and they are delivered to my house. I just write him a check. The prices are amazing. I just got a set of the new Nexen Roadian ATXs for under $700.

I know BFG’s are good tires and a proven tread pattern that has been out for 20plus years, I was surprised to see only one person say that the BFG’s were noisy, I borrowed a co workers work truck with a worn out set(probably the problem), they were so loud, he couldn’t hear it, but said the last guy he gave a ride complained how loud they are it he was tone deaf to it, I drove his truck to the tire store on the way back to the office I’m and put a set of USA MADE Cooper st/maxx on the truck and they have been great, I also have a set on my work truck and they are working well and seem to do great. I have had many of cooper at3’s on all my previous work trucks and old duramax, but that always seemed to cup on the inside, maybe it was my ball joints or lack of rotations. But still managed great mileage. I have driven 300,000 miles on the cooper at3’s with one flat tire, pulling a 38’ gooseneck loaded at least 50 percent of time,So I have had great luck with coopers. The tires I have had bad luck with were mastercrafts…15 years ago I drove a truck with a brand new set 37 miles and the cap flew off, damaged the quarter panel. I heard on the web mastercrafts are owned by cooper but also only 4 ply of memory serves me correct.
I am not sure what exact tire I will buy when the noisy duratracs are worn but I do know that it will be a USA Made Cooper. Hell even the trailer tires cooper makes in Mexico have done me well, also as well as the cooper enduramax tires on my wife’s last car, she loved them because of the traction in the snow in unplowed snowy driveways of her patients. Maybe it was the rabbit hunting trip 25 years ago in my brother in laws old full time 4wd blazer with lockers front/rear you, when we slid off the road down into a creek bed I seen my brother in law shift in the lockers, I still thought we were done for and would take 10 hours of hard labor and another truck to get out but nope he floored it and that blazer damn near went vertical and climbed out, tires spinning, smoking but still biting,to my disbelief we made it out I was shocked and from that moment on I was a die hard cooper fan! My $.02

I moved on from the Duratracs after 50K miles and went with the Toyo Open Country AT3. They’ve been great.

I know the BFG KO2 tires are good tires but with running them all summer I noticed wet traction is not the greatest.

So I picked up a second set of wheels and tires for the winter months and for long road trips during the summer. When not used on the Trailboss they will be on the wifes 23 Tahoe Z71.

What I got was 20x9 Trailboss reps with LT275/60/20 Falken Wildpeak AT3W. I had the Falken on a past truck in a SL passenger rating and liked them but this time did the LT tire with a D rating. Falken were always good in wet/snowy weather. The Trailboss reps are just like the 18" rims just in a 20" size. I will swap over the bowtie center caps to keep the oem look.

Hope to install them Friday or Saturday.

I have been eyeing the Falken AT3WA's which are a slightly less rugged look compared with the AT3W's in your photos. Curious if anyone's had any experience?

Why Falkens? I am getting DT to price match and they are under $185/corner + installation taxes etc. for the 18" OEM size.

I know this is a bit older thread- but did you replace the Territory tires ? Mine has 34k on it now and getting real noisy, especially at 60 mph. Rotation used to seem to correct this but not anymore! Getting too worn now. Thinking of KO2’s which I run on my jeeps. Seem to go longer before getting noisy.

For my second set of tires, I went with BFG All Terrain KO2. So far love them. Much quieter.
Did the same. Loved the duratracs and got about 50k out of them. I went with the KO2s this time and i am very pleased with the performance.

You are not going to escape the noise at high mileage. I've been through a lot of these tires and every single one of them was loud AF after 20k miles. I haven't experienced the (Tread Pattern A, not OEM) Territory MTs yet at high mileage but I expect plenty of noise. Mine are at 5k and so far are noticeably quieter than Duratracs, KO2s, Ridge Grapplers, and Wildpeaks were at that mileage. But 5k is nothing. 20k will be the real test.

No I haven't yet replaced the Territory tires, currently at about 36,000 miles. Very Noisy at speed, but lots of tread left. Really leaning toward the new BFG KO3's that are out and replace the KO2's. Supposed to have even stronger sidewalls ... IIRC, "27 % stronger" sidewalls. That's what I'm interested in, so I can run 15 PSI without bead locks and without worry. The current Territory tires work well down to 16 PSI on trails rated 5 - 6 difficulty ... but I don't trust them.

I just bought the ko2’s they get installed this week. Costco had a good deal. 1339 incl taxes. I hear they are quieter than the oem duratracs . They urge rotation every 3k miles. I’ll post a review of the tires when I get em.

I ended up going with the Falken Wildpeak RT/01's 35x11.5x20. I got new wheels as well G-FX TM5's in 20x9 at a 0 Offset. I think they look very nice. The tires so far are quieter than the duratacs but definitely ride a little harder.

All in all they look great and should perform very nicely.

Any recommendations for what to use to recalibrate for the larger tires? I've been looking at RC speedo tuner or the Pulsar...
