6.2 vs 5.3?

You buy a truck with the 6.2 engine because you like the power it has, and it's a dandy. But then you run 87 fuel. To get all that the excellent 6.2has to offer and the reason you bought, why in the world would you not run 93 octane fuel?
I have a2020trail boss with a 5.3 10spd. It runs well. I also have a 2019 Camero with a 6.2 10 speed, I bought it for fun and would never run anything but 93 octane fuel.
Buy, each to his own.
one reason for me is 100 mile round trip to work (all highway) and back and 93 is over $4/gal. I mix it up, but never 87 octane.

You need to figure out the gas mileage you get with 93 then compare it to the 87 (or whatever your running).
You should get close to if not the advertised MPG with the 93, but not with the lower octane. So in the end, you maybe spending more $$.
The reason (which may have been stated already) is the engine will detect a knock with the lower octane and retard the timing so it doesn't ruin the engine. So you'll get less performance and less gas mileage.

I specifically bought the truck with the 6.2L and use only 93, its not cheep, but it what i wanted.
If i wanted something good on gas, I would have bought a Prius.

Yes its a beast, especially with the Pulsar LT and the throttle response set to 5 - but it a quiet Beast... ;)

Not if you have exhaust.

Can only imagine when I add headers. 👀

I have had 3 5.3's they do well for the size, fuel economy is good, power is ok, but the performance as a general statement is average....
I drove a Ram for a week with a V 6 and was impressed with how smooth it was as well the economy was surprising, but not much power for hwy stuff...
The 6.2 liter stock and modified pull really hard particularly at higher RPM's .... I actually was surprised how fast it pulled to 98 MPH then I discovered the limiter, which was dangerous as I needed at least that speed to get by this ass hat in front of me... I run Premo gas as well Mobil 1 or Amsoil oil... I get great fuel economy on the hwy and crap around town, for me the small extra cost in fuel is worth it for the 6.2 its fun to drive and a great baseline for a super charger or turbo or just a great intake and exhaust... the fuel economy is definitely better with higher octane, no question there... Like alot of comments I come from the camp of go big or go home... either way its a great truck and we all have that in common !

Yeah, it gets up to speed pretty quick. Gotta say though, the 10spd trans makes for a different feel. The shifting is buttery smooth, exhaust note doesn't change much. Just, weird.

Also, sucks for the speed limiter, I agree. I might look at that in-line adapter to bypass speed limiter and remove timing curve on throttle response at lower RPM/speeds.

ya I haven't done anything as I just got the new lifters and I am heading back to the Baja and afraid to make any changes.. 10 speed ya forgot to mention its huge in this combo....

well this thread got carried away lol!

6.2 has 11.5 to 1 compression. To avoid predetonation (valve clatter). Regular gas will detonate by compression before the ignition fires thus causing it to run like shit. I've had 5.3 Silverado and Now I have 6.2 . I don't care if premium fuel is 10$ a gallon. I'd still get the 6.2. it's a bad mother fcker. And gets way better gas mileage than the 5.3.

To avoid predetonation premium gas is used or timing has to be backed off. (Which also will make it run like shit

6.2 no question. You do not even need to run 93, mine runs on 91 perfectly which is "premium" in my state. Gas economy will be similar to the 5.3 which is win-win.
