What's new

Anyone else? (ticking and shaking)

Do you know the build date of your truck?

I picked up my 2021 TB April 11 with just 25 miles. I actually bought it sight unseen over the phone. Anyway, the dealer would NOT Allow me to take delivery until all the lifters in the engine were replaced first. GM has apparently issued a service bulletin required dealers to replace lifters with the new part numbers before it leaves the lot. I'm a die hard GM man but my research shows GM didn't do this willingly. There is a Class Action lawsuit pending in District Court over the lifter failure issue. With respect to the "ticking" people describe hearing such as when they go through a drivethru, it is my understanding this is the high pressure fuel pump for these direct injected engines. It doesn't always mean a lifter is failing. I could be wrong about this and someone with more knowledge is more than welcome to set the record straight.

That being said, there ARE things that reportedly preserve the life of your engine, mainly an after market computer such as the Pulsar LT to deactivate AFM. For those who may be outside their 5 year power train warranty and find themselves with lifter failed, I assume the aftermarket has come up with regular lifters (like what was in GM engines before AFM) to replace them with, completely eliminating the AFM system all together. Again, I'm assuming this but if someone hasn't made standard lifters for these engines yet, I'd be surprised.

Of course I found about this issue just after purchasing my 2021 TB with 5.3 4 weeks ago! My nephew had '21 Tahoe with this engine and broke down on a roadtrip with less than 10k on odometer. Dealer tech told him the problem was factory corrected mid year 2021; first 6 months of production vehicles are going to be a problem. Definitely improves your odds by deactivating the cylinder drop as described above. I'm tempted to just let it happen and get the updated/ improved parts replaced when it does, but OMG the inconvenience! I've read there are lawsuits and attempts to force GM to recall these vehicles, but it may never happen.

This issue had me so paranoid that I installed the Pulsar @ 500 miles. I had to have lifter work done on my 2010 Silverado and it was such a pita dealing with that. That was @ 11k miles. As far as going the zr2 route, I wouldn't leave the dealership parking lot without installing the pulsar.

See this post. I am asking the question if anyone actually has success with PULSAR LT preventing lifter failure - those that have run it and have high mileage without lifters failing.......

I heard cylinder deactivation is what is helping to prompt the lifter failures. I had one go bad on my driver's side at about 11,000 miles. I immediately purchased a Superchips tuner (also deactivates DFM like the Pulsar LT does) and deactivated DFM. I am now just shy of 30,000 miles, no more issues so far. I think keeping those engines in permanent V8 mode is the best preventative measure you can take. Oil catch-cans are helpful too.

For sure, just didn't know if anyone else with the Custom 5.3 without DFM/AFM has had or heard of any issues.
Curious as well. I had an opportunity to change my refresh order due to a running board constraint, so I went from the 6.2 to the 5.3, mostly due to gas $$ but the fact that the 5.3 didn't have DFM didn't hurt either.

Yes I also have a catch can. No issues whatsoever. It's quite surprising that the can is about a third of the way full after 3,000 miles on a newer engine. They are worth the money for sure!
What type of can did you go with, heard people complaining about vacuum leak noise with the JLT

Mine is the J&L oil separater, no problems with it so far! They have since merged with a company called OSC, so the appearance is a little different now. But I am pretty sure it is still the same product. Link below:

2000 miles of highway driving- I have had NO noise issues with the OSC/J&L can

I have the J&L catch can too. I had heard about the noise problem from LonestarHawiian. So I bought a roll of hush tape on Amazon and wrapped the hoses before I ever installed it. No issues with noise. And the can does it's job. Attached is photos of what the can caught after emptying it the first time after 3000 miles.

Does anyone know what happens if the vehicle has this same issues after the 3 year 36K warranty? Makes me nervous that my truck has around 48,000 miles on it and could possibly fail.. Definitely something I would not want to pay out of pocket to fix.. Maybe it’s time for me to start looking at the new ZR2 if that the case.. Best of luck, and definitely demand GM gives you a rental vehicle..
Should have got the extended warranty, my 2022 trail boss is a 2022 but w/o DFM so I don’t plan on having lifter issues since it came from the factory without DFM but everyone knows about the lifter issues so not buying extended warranty is kind of a dumb decision

Guys (and gals), you have basically 3 separate warranties on you TB. The first is 3yr 36,000 mile. Think of this as a bumper to bumper warranty. Then there is the 5yr 50,000 mile warranty. This is power train and absolutely includes lifters and transmission. Then you have 10yr 100,000 mile rust through warranty. Rust through means a hole "through" the metal, not just surface rust. There seems to be a lot of guys (and gals) who think after 3yr 36,000 mile their engines/lifters aren't covered. This simply isn't true.

37000 miles on mine and she has been in the shop for 3 weeks now. I had lifter issues on cylinder 3. I hope I get it back soon.

2020 Chevy Trail Boss with the 5.2
So, last night, the truck started ticking and shaking a bit, then the service ESC came on, then parking brake light. Parked it for the night, got up for work and left the house at 3 a.m, didn’t even get off our street and check engine light and transmission light came on along with the ESC and parking brake light again, only this time, it was ticking, shaking, and making worse noises. Turned around and parked it back in the driveway and waited for the local Chevy dealer service dept to open and drove it roughly 3 miles tops to the dealership to drop it off. Truck has only 20k miles. Anyone else had this problem or know if it’s a known issue?

Same thing happened to my husband's truck this week. Lifters had to be replaced and a bent rod. Only 19000 miles on it! Picked it up today and the work was for a recall now. Unbelievable! So watch out for a recall. Dealer didn't even inspect the truck. Pretty disappointing!
